UTICA - A section of the northbound Arterial will remain closed until 7:30 p.m. following an accident in which the hydraulic-lift portion of a garbage truck struck the state Route 8 bridge overpass.
Officials shut down state Route 12 near where the accident occurred, along with the ramp from Route 8 south to the Arterial, to allow maintenance crews to assess damage to the bridge, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The accident occurred at 1:30 p.m. when a Feher Rubbish Removal dumpster truck struck the Route 8 overpass while traveling with its dumpster lift elevated, Utica police said.
The truck came to an abrupt stop after the initial crash, causing a second vehicle behind it to also become involved in the accident, police said.
Both drivers, whose names were not immediately available, suffered minor injuries and were transported to local hospitals, police said.
Utica firefighters also are in the process of cleaning up about 30 gallons of hydraulic fuel that spilled at the scene during the accident, according to initial reports.
